I spent some time scanning through a bunch of Flickr mashups and apps. The most enjoyable one I found was Montager. Some of the mosaics really look very close to the original picture! And I like the way you can select a picture from within the mosaic to create a new mosaic.
Other things I found interesting include AlphaLearnr, Printr Killr, and Clockr. AlphaLearnr searches by tags to bring up photos representing words for each letter of the alphabet. The site claims this will help children to learn English words, but it also has a disclaimer that some of the photos may not be appropriate for children. Indeed, it may be more confusing than helpful: U for umbrella didn't bring up a single photo of an umbrella, but there were two photos of dandelions. I'm not sure what significance that holds. Printr Killr is a somewhat oddly named application for creating your own calendar from Flickr photos. This is a neat concept, and the preview pictures looked promising, but the downloaded PDF file of the final product was blank. It could be a compatibility problem with my Mac and Firefox, though. Finally, Clockr seems like a variation of Spell with Flickr. It shows a clock with hour, minute, and second digits portrayed with numbers taken from Flickr photos.
These mashups and apps are interesting, but they aren't very useful. I didn't find anything that I would use more than once or twice to stave off boredom. I think I would find things more useful if I had a lot of digital photos to post to my own Flickr account, but that's not where my interests lie right now.
